In early 2011 it was announced that Osmotherley Youth Hostel was to close at the end of the 2011 season. This is due to insufficient usage over recent years combined with the cost required to modernise the building.
The New Lyke Wake Club has been informed that should there be a marked increase in hostel usage in the remainder of 2011, this decision will be reconsidered.
The New Lyke Wake Club strongly believes that this facility should remain open to provide a vital facility not only for Lyke Wake Walkers but also for Cleveland Way walkers and outdoor people in general. Recent years have seen the closure of two other hostels in the North York Moors National Parks, namely Westerdale and Wheeldale, and at a time of increasing interest in outdoor activities, closure of Osmotherley Youth Hostel is considered by the New Lyke Wake Club to be a sad and untimely loss.
We would request that all Lyke Wake groups seriously consider using the hostel not only to assist in keeping it open but also because it caters very well for Lyke Wake Walk groups.
Situated within easy walking distance of Osmotherley and less than a mile from the start of the Lyke Wake walk makes it an ideal location for walkers, runners, cyclists and families alike.
